Desenzano del Garda - Culture

Near to the shores of Lake Garda there is an archaeological museum displaying many findings that help us to better understand the origins of the town of Desenzano. The nearby ruins of the Roman villa date back to the fourth century BC. In the 10th century, in the upper part of the city, the castle was built in the medieval village reflecting the medieval style. In the area where you can still see the ruins of a mediaeval tower there is a wonderful view over the lower part of the town and the lake. In 1588 the church dedicated to San Giovanni Decollato was built in the area named Capolaterra and if you follow the medieval streets you will reach Palazzo Locatelli – Isonni (1785) and Palazzo Macchioni – Tonoli – Baresani, which offered hospitality to Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1862. Heading for Piazza Duomo, however, you can find Palazzo Alberti – Parini and eighteenth century Palazzo Manzini.
